New Southern Film.

The Nitty Gritty

Quilts are more than just beautiful representations of family, love, and creativity—they are living artifacts, stitched with survival, lineage, and resistance. Historically, quilt squares served as a covert language along the Underground Railroad, guiding those seeking freedom. I chose quilts as our main illustrations because they are both deeply Southern and broadly resonant, and its roots carry stories that remain poignant and relevant today.

Carrboro Film Fest exists to both celebrate and interrogate the South. Last year, a staff member insightfully noted that showing up—for film, for challenging conversations, for one another—is a form of democracy in action. Taking the time to gather, watch, listen, and let creativity bloom is an act of resistance as well.

Being on staff for Carrboro Film Fest has pushed me creatively as a designer. I get to experiment, think deeply, and stretch my skills. I care deeply about intentional branding, and assembling this brand kit was a significant undertaking—licensing two unique typefaces truly elevated the work. Another distinctive aspect of the festival is our desire to keep things a little lighthearted; Carrboro doesn’t take itself too seriously. Balancing deep roots with a sense of playfulness is an ongoing act of creative equilibrium.

In a world where oral tradition is fading and history is being rewritten, seeking truth is more important than ever. Resistance and creativity are essential to democracy, but in dark times, lightness and laughter are just as vital. Joy and irreverence, too, have their place in the ongoing story of resistance.

Southern culture is a tapestry of grit and grace. It holds both tension and tenderness: family, fun, kindness, and kitchen-table wisdom. Yes, there’s fear in the air—but there’s also hope, resilience, and enduring strength.

We have to fill our cups to keep doing the work. So gather with us in Carrboro. Let’s celebrate diverse voices, wrestle with the tough questions, and continue keeping these stories alive.
